Possible Link Found Between Sleep-Disordered Breathing

The link between sleep apnea/hypopnea and cardiovascular disease has been long known, but no physical connector had been established until a recent study at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. There, researchers examined varying inhibitors to find a link between the sleep disorder and potentially life threatening disease. Looking at plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1), fribinogen and D-dimer in over 500 apnea patients, scientists found that the patients with even slight breathing issues had enhanced pro-thrombotic biochemical profiles. The enhancement increases risk for cardiovascular disease. The PAI-1 increases were strong in those both mildly and severely affected by apnea when tested in the morning, indicating that the inhibitors could be good reflectors of overnight stress. Knowing that these specific inhibitors respond negatively to sleep disordered breathing, scientists can now work to find chemical treatments for the problem that affects an ever growing number of Americans. The research is the first to firmly connect heart disease and sleep apnea, and though more work needs to be done it is a step in the right direction. The study helps to paint a picture of just how important a good night of sleep is for not only the mind, but each organ system within the body. Further research will be done to find whether treating mild sleep disordered breathing will improve cardiovascular health in adults as well as treating major sleep disorders, which is the standard now. The study has been released on the American Thoracic Society website as well as in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
